August 2010 eNews

Summer has been “Hot and Wet”!  Hope you have enjoyed it.

Note: The MRPA Softball Tournament will only be Sat. and Sunday August 21 and 22 (details below).  If you signed up for Friday Night, you get the night off.  We will still need some help on Friday Aug. 20, starting at 1 PM to get set up!

Fridley Rotary Club is having a Wine Tasting Food Sampling Event on Wed. Aug. 18, at the Fridley Knights of Columbus Hall starting at 5:30 PM.  The hall is at 6831 Highway 65.  The cost is $20.  You can buy tickets at the door.

We are looking at a new format for our “Social Meetings”.  We are trying to make them more fun.  They will consist of a short, 10 – 15 minute meeting, followed by fun activities, possibly at various locations.  We view this as an opportunity to get to know the other Lions better and just have fun without all the rigorous format.  If you have any ideas for things you would like to do, let me know.

The first Social Meeting is Tues. August 24, at 2 Stooges Bar and Grill.  If you would like to eat, come between 5 and 7 PM.  The Fridley Lions are getting a special discount donated to our club, you need a flyer from Lion Bruce Falink.  Bring along family members, friends and people who might be interested in joining the Fridley Lions.  At 7 PM anyone interested can play pool and darts.

We are hosting a Fundraiser Waffle Breakfast on Sept 26, for the Saba Family in Memory of Dean’s wife Lynne.  The Fridley Lions are selling the tickets, if you need some, contact Lion Ron.  We will also be conducting a Silent Auction.  All proceeds go to the Saba Family.

We have updated our Calendar of Events for 2010-11.  I have put the dates in the web site through Dec. at   www.fridleylions.org  Calendar.  If you have or know of key dates to add, please let me know.

We conducted our first Fridley Lions Beer Brewing event.  Four different beers were brewed.   Come to the Fridley Lions Family Picnic on Sept. 19, at Mahnomen Park and sample some of the brew.

August 12Fare For All Food Distribution at Fridley Community Center.  Be there at 9 AM, done by noon. The Fridley Lions help set up the food and deliver it to the cars of the people purchasing the food.  Pass the word to any person you know that might want to purchase the food at about a 50% discount.  It is open to anyone in the community.  We have been passing the information to some of the local churches to tell their members who could benefit from this service.

August 21 - 22Note there will not be any games on Friday evening. The Fridley Lions will be hosting the MRPA Men’s E State Softball Tournament at Fridley Community Park.   We need a lot of workers to make this successful.  We will be managing the gate, concessions, field maintenance, grilling and general operations.  It is a 2 day event.

July 2010 eNews

Membership for 2010-11 is in the final stages.  We have been working hard at locking in our members for the upcoming year.  If you have not contacted Lion Mary Olson, please do so.  Dues for this year are $60.

Lion Bruce Falink is planning the Social Meeting for August.  With the summer vacations, we will start the new format in August.  We want to bring prospective members to the Social Meetings.  We feel it is more relaxed and not as confusing as the Business Meetings where we discuss Gambling and Needs.

Hats off to our Gambling Manager Lion Bruce Falink.  He has secured a contract with the Shorewood Bar and Grill for Pull Tabs and Bingo.  Lion Bruce will be working with them to try and open as soon as possible.  Target date is August 1.
