Fridley Lions eNews for February 2012
We are moving forward for the second half of the Fridley Lions year. Our membership is at 69. We have many projects and activities scheduled, so get ready.
We have gotten a little press in the last City of Fridley Newsletter, covering our 35th Annual Senior Citizen Christmas Dinner. Check it out, see if you recognize anyone. There also was an article in the Focus on our Fridley Lions Fruit Basket preparation and distribution. We need to get more visibility for all the good work our Lions do!
We continue to help distribute food the second Thursday of each month at the Fridley Community Center. Come about 9:30 AM for setup, done by noon. It is a very good cause – Fare For All Food Distribution.
We just complete our Winter Warmup, Lion Mary Olson chaired, with help from many other Lions. It was held at the VFW and was a very successful fund raiser.
The MidWinter Convention was the third weekend in January. Our club had about 15 members attend. A good time was had by all. We shared the hospitality room with the Blaine Central Club.
In addition to the Winter Warmup, the MidWinter Convention, we also hosted a Waffle Breakfast as part of the Fridley Winterfest and was chaired by Lions Ken Schultz and Tim Dold. All profits went to the Fridley 49er Royalty Program.
There will be an Appreciation and Recognition get together for Lion Bruce Falink, our retiring Gambling Manager. Come to the Fridley Shortstop on Monday Feb. 20, starting at 6 PM. Enjoy a meal and have some fun.
The annual Governor’s Night will be at MOEs Bar and Grill (old Donatelle’s) on Tues. Feb. 28. The event is being chaired by Lions Bud Dauphin and Sue Johnson. The cost will be $20 per person for St. Louis Ribs, Southern Fried Chicken, Garlic Mash Potatoes, Salads and all the trimmings. They will have a signup at the Feb. 14, meeting.
Lion Joanne Toews is arranging a Fridley Lions Social Event on Friday March 9, 2012. It is at the White Bear Lake Central Auditorium. It is entitled “White Bearlanca” a take off on Casablanca and performed by the White Bear Lake Lions as an annual event. Some of our members have seen this in the past and highly recommend it. The cost is a very reasonable $9 per person and starts at 7 PM. Check out their website for more information: http://www.whitebearlions.org/show_2012.htm
We will be conducting our annual voting for our Lions Awards – Melvin Jones, Hear Award, Lion of the Year, and many more. Take some time to consider who you want to honor. We will be having voting at upcoming meetings.
A few future events we want you to consider:
- Twins Opener on Monday April 2 – Lion Doc Reznicow is chairing
- Feed My Starving Children at 6 PM, it is a competition with other Lions Clubs, Lion Bruce Falink is the chair and collecting names
- Be the One Run will be held on May 19, Lion Dean Saba will be providing details
I will be out of the country from Feb. 6, returning Feb. 20. I have the opportunity to go to Europe and officiate wrestling in Germany and London. Lion Joanne Toews will be the contact if you have questions or ideas for projects.
Regards, Lion Ron Ackerman
